Type Armenian with Latin Letters

In Latin → Armenian mode you write Armenian words the way they sound, using ordinary Latin letters, and they are converted to Armenian script instantly. For example barev becomes բարև and shnorhakalutyun becomes շնորհակալություն. It converts Armenian words written in Latin letters, it does not translate English sentences into Armenian.

An online Armenian keyboard is useful whenever you cannot change the system keyboard:

  • shared and public computers
  • office computers with locked settings
  • schools and universities
  • while travelling
  • diaspora users writing to family
  • people learning Armenian
  • devices without Armenian letters printed on the keys

Armenian Keyboard Layouts

Three standard layouts are available inside the keyboard.

Phonetic

Armenian letters sit on the Latin keys that sound closest to them, so A gives ա and S gives ս. The easiest layout if you already know a Latin keyboard.

Eastern

The standard layout used in Armenia for Eastern Armenian, matching the letter positions Armenian typists learn.

Western

The Western Armenian arrangement used across the diaspora, differing from Eastern on a small set of consonant keys.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I type Armenian without an Armenian keyboard?
Use the virtual keyboard on this page. Click the Armenian keys with your mouse or finger, or type on your physical keyboard and the letters are mapped to Armenian automatically.
Can I use an English keyboard to type Armenian?
Yes. With the Phonetic layout the Latin keys produce the Armenian letters that sound closest to them, so an ordinary English keyboard is enough.
What is an Armenian phonetic keyboard?
A layout that places Armenian letters on the Latin keys with a similar sound instead of the traditional typewriter positions. It is the fastest layout to learn.
What is the difference between Eastern and Western Armenian keyboard layouts?
Both cover the same alphabet. The Western layout moves a small group of consonants to match Western Armenian pronunciation, which is why keys such as ք, կ, տ and դ sit in different places.

What is Armenian transliteration?
Writing Armenian words with Latin letters, and converting them back into the Armenian alphabet. The words stay Armenian, only the script changes.
